Jeffrey S. Istvan

Jeffrey S. Istvan, a member, received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1992, where he was a Hardy Cross Dillard Scholar. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Rochester, from which he graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He clerked for The Honorable Robert S. Gawthrop, III, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 1992-93.

Since joining Fine, Kaplan and Black in October, 1993, Mr. Istvan has had wide-ranging experience in complex cases, including antitrust, securities fraud, RICO, legal malpractice, corporate mismanagement, consumer protection and civil rights cases. Mr. Istvan has been named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer by Philadelphia Magazine.

In recent years, Mr. Istvan has served as lead or co-lead counsel in several class actions resulting in excellent – and sometimes unprecedented – recoveries for the class. See, e.g., Standard Iron Works v. ArcelorMittal, et al., No. 08-cv-5214 (N.D. Ill.) ($194 million in settlements for direct purchasers of steel products alleging conspiracy among manufacturers to restrict supply); In re Metoprolol Succinate End-Payor Antitrust Litig., No. 06-cv-71 (D. Del.) ($11 million settlement for end payors of an illegally monopolized prescription drug); Terrapin Express, Inc. v. Airborne Express, Inc. ($25 million settlement for independent contractors alleging underpayment by express delivery company; largest recovery in AAA class arbitration); In re Remeron Antitrust Litig., No. 02-cv-2007 (D.N.J.) ($36 million settlement for end payors of an illegally monopolized prescription drug); Parsky v. First Union Corp., No. 771, Feb. Term 2001 (C.C.P. Phila. Cty.) ($23 million settlement for trust customers of a bank; largest recovery in a common trust fund conversion case). In addition, Mr. Istvan served as one of the principal counsel to a group of large purchasers of copper in In re Copper Antitrust Litig., 528 F. Supp. 2d 908 (W.D. Wis. 2007), a complex antitrust case alleging futures market manipulation that settled favorably for a confidential sum on the eve of trial in 2007.

Outside the office, Mr. Istvan is the principal trumpet in the Delaware County Symphony and has served on its board. He also volunteers as a youth sports coach with Mt. Airy Baseball and Chestnut Hill Basketball.
